The best way to cut thick SS with a wheel is to make a full cross cut, but only 1/32" - 1/16" deep. Go across a second and third time. You can either cut it off or bend it and break it off at that point and clean up the edge.

I've read all the posting about torch cutting stainless steel. Thanks for the comments, however I need a little more advice. I'm cutting a large stainless tank into 3x5 pieces. Which of the above methods would allow me the fastest way to cut a large tank into small pieces. Plasma torch, metabo grinder, power nibblers, skill saw with metal cutting blade, fiberglas reinforced cut-off wheels, mig welder, or hydraulic cutter. Thanks for your help.

A Sawsall might be the easiest way if the metal isn't too thick.

I've never used a plasma torch, but that might work too.

I used to work at an industrial instrument manufacturer. We would open 304 SS cases with a plasma cutter. If it will conduct electricity you can cut it with a plasma torch - copper, aluminum, stainless ect.
Trying to use an oxy-ac torch won't work, you'll just melt the stainless & warp the sheet.

Look up your nearest Waterjet cutter if your talking 1/4" SS

A waterjet cutter is good, if the part to be cut can be put in the waterjet machine.

A plasma cutter is a wonderful thing for cutting stainless steel plate. Just make sure it is big enough (amps wise) for the thickness you want to cut. It makes a clean cut with little heat affected zone. You also stand a much better chance of borrowing a plasma cutter and they are much cheaper if you want to buy one.

in the early 70's i use a plasma cutter mounted on a track torch. they demostrsted a oxy-ac touch that used a iron power to remove ss at a high rate of speed.i don't what ever become of this concept. this may work for you.
