I was thinking that but the crab apples I am familiar with have larger fruits (the largest of these were under 1/2 inch). The seeds are definitely apple seed-like, but the fruits more like berries than even the smallest of apples and they are basically rotting on the trees, accounting for the change in color. I seem to recall the crab apple tree in my backyard as a child would shed the apples to the ground. I also don't recall the leaves being serrated, but smooth edged. Obviously I know nothing of tree families and similarities or cultivars to make any kind of judgement. :) I am learning though!

Definitely a crab apple - many cultivars available with different colours and sizes of fruit. Golden Hornet is one yellow one which I eventually cut down because of its habit of hanging on to its rotten brown fruit all winter until it was pushed off by the new blossom. But the fruit on yours looks too small for GH.

Thanks, flora! I've poured over some more photos and I think this one could be 'Golden Raindrops'. Which is certainly appropriate. If memory serves me correctly my mother didn't care much for ours either but it served as home base for the neighborhood kids' hide and seek games so it wasn't going anywhere. I do remember the blooms on it being spectacular so it doesn't surprise me there are lots of cultivars now. Thanks again for your help!

Lol ok scratch that. I jumped the gun. Golden Raindrops has oak-shaped leaves. Guess I'll be waiting until next year to see what the blooms look like. Didn't want to to misinform anyone so thought I'd update my post. :)

No, I don’t know enough about them to say what cultivar is. Do you know what colour the flowers were? Or what colour the fruit will be? If so you could try Googling with that information.

I will have to wait for the fruit, as I have lived here for 4 summers and only realised these little apples a few days ago, lol! Thanks for he tip!
