won,t start with key

i have a yardman rideon lawn mower and when i turn key i get nothing.it has a light that comes on when i turn the key that indicates it's not in park,but it appears to be in park.i've replaced the solenoid with no results,so now i have to start it with booster cables from battery to the starter.anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Key switch? Have you jumped directly from the battery to the small terminal on the solenoid to see if that runs the starter? IF it does, then the problem is either in the key switch OR safety switches between the key switch and the solenoid. Deck switch, neutral switch, clutch switch for example.
