It's always nice to have engine #'s.

Often, when servicing a carb, crud gets broken loose in the fuel line and immediately gets flushed into the needle/seat upon reinstallation.
You basically have to perform a "do over" and flush the line before the reinstall.

Thanks, Bill, for the advice. I'll go through the procedure again, following your instructions. Briggs evidently decided, in their infinite wisdom, to make the engine number as difficult to find as possible. Local mechanic says start looking for it by removing metal plates on engine block. I haven't done that yet as I was hoping adjustment of the float would be fairly simple. The "engine family" number is easily found by tilting the engine on its side and reading it quickly before oil begins running out somewhere. That number, according to the parts guy, is worthless. i have found that a small mirror or lady's compact mirror works great for reading numbers under something.

did you have any tarnish inthe bowl/on the float when you took it apart? the float could be stuck open allowing the bowl to fill and overflow. if they are gold colored, spray them with some carb cleaner to remove the tarnish.

Allot of times this a float needle problem if it occurs after shut down.
