Garage door openers (Craftsman)

I have a 1/2hp garage door opener that has a problem. About 89% of the time when I try to open the door it goes up approx,12" and stops, push the button again and it goes back down, push the button again and it goes up normally. 20% of the time it works fine. I have checked for loose bolts or mis-aligbed tracks and there is none. It is model #139.53985. Any Ideas?

First thing you should do is remove the cover and check the drive gear. You will find it right in front of the motor. When it starts going bad it will cause your symptoms. If it looks okay then you can adjust the 'up force' which is located on the back near where all those white wires go. It may just be a case of compensating for door springs that are getting tired.
