I have not seen the meters you refer to.

However, there are some full featured weather stations that will do exactly what you are looking for.

To get the logging capability that I think you want, costs a couple hundred (Weax station plus the sensor).

Another method to figure out what you have is to plant something that is a full shade plant in that spot and see how it does for the season (hosta or atstilbe).

If you are trying to figure out the UV exposure for planting, you could also look at the similar orientation another house and see what is growing there. It can give you a rough idea which should be good enough for planting purposes.

I have used solar garden lights for that.
The ones I bought 4/$10, pretty much burn an hour for each hour of full sun. Makes it pretty simple to tell how much sun an area gets.

Can anyone else shed some 'light' on whether this (SunCalc) is something to have in the Gardener's collection of useful tools?

I purchased a SunCalc last week! I'm fairly new to gardening and new to my house, so I put the meter up in the questionable spots. I was really impressed with it until I realized every place I have tested so far has come up as "Part Shade". While this is entirely possible, given the locations, it may be also be operator error or meter error.

I will try to put the meter in the obvious spots around my house and let you know it works.

After a few more days of using the SunCalc, I have had it register "Full Sun" and "Full Shade" in the more obvious spots in my yard, so it's working well.

Overall, the meter is very easy to use. There is just one button and the display seems very simple. If you forget to check your meter at the end of the day or after two days, when you turn it on to take data again, it will flash the last reading a couple of times then start flashing all the lights to let you know it is taking data.

I'd recommend this to anyone that is too busy or forgetful to observe the lighting conditions every hour around the yard all day.

I think this will help me a lot since I was not sure about a few areas in my yard that are near some large trees. Now all I have to do is hack out all the weedy looking stuff that is there and pick out some plants.
