Soil, Compost & Mulch

Age-ing Manure

Hi, there,

I'm trying to figure out when manure is considered aged enough to put on the roses without putting it in the compost pile first. If it's dry is that long enough not to burn the plants? I've got a couple of farms happy to give me all the manure I can haul, but if I need to store it for long that'll limit the amount I can take. Thanks.

My guess is when it is crumbly and no longer has the distictive "pile" shape.

Thanks for the clarification. The cow manure will have to sit a while longer then.

Karen, they may have some that is aged from being piled up for awhile. Ask about it. I know that there is a difference in horse and cow manure, but this is prime, aged, composted {{gwi:271664}} about 18 months old. {{gwi:271665}} is a close up view. Cow manure should look quite similar when aged and composted (which it does on it's own when piled up.) Also, it should NOT have a strong, offensive or unpleasant odor.
