John Deere 212 variator problem

I bought a used JD 212 in pretty good shape. The variator, however, seems to be stripped; the lever is very difficult to move and it doesn't change the speed when it is moved and it FEELS stripped. Is this a repair that a person with at least some minimal skills can undertake? Is there an online manual (couldn't find one and they want over $100 at the Deere website...)

I've had them stick at the variator itself- which is kinda like freeing up any variable speed pulley. Ok to work a little lube in and work it out but watch out to contaminate the belt.I don't recall if they come apart to help matters along. Can't think of what would make it feel stripped...
