the ones we have used before, i don't knwo the model cause we just rent what is available, you pull them along. fire them up, lower the trencher and start it moving. it trenches behind you as you go along and sort of moves itself. it throws the dirt up to either side of the trench. when you are done, you simply push the dirt back in the trench.

Okay, thanks. I'll probably have to rent it one day, but I now have an other alternative to my problem os I won't have to do it this time.

Only problem I have seen with this trencher was that the operator cut the buried electrical power and cable tv connections running to house. Trencher worked beatifully and the wires were an operator error.

If this is the walk behind model you can rent at Lowes
It will only trench to about 12 inches deep.

We used a walk behind trencher (not from Lowes) to do
our water line from the well house. The guy that was
helping us learned that he never wanted to operate one again.
He was plum wore out after about 150 feet of trenching.
I watched him work and was glad it wasn't me.
YMMV. We have extra hard ground.
