Soil cracking and exposing the root

With the heat, I notice the soil is drying up and cracking. Recently, I notice a large crack has appear and exposing the root. Around the allium, I notice the soil has pulled away exposing the root, too.

How often does this happen and how do I guard around it? I filled the crack up with compost and topsoil, water it and mulch on top.
