Window Vent Openers

Has anyone had any experience using the automatic vent openers for opening panels or shutters? Some are called "solar" and contain a wax than expands/contracts. Another type I saw had this description..... "Gas charged cylinder and piston rod, opens and closes window". Both types have a lift capacity of 15 lbs, have a certain temperature range and are adjustable. FarmTek now sells a solar one to open/close an exhaust shutter panel.

Do these work or would they open/close too slowly for the greenhouse environment? I'm looking for ways to have some automation not be electrical. It is very expensive up here. I actually pay more for the electricity I don't use than I do for the electricity I do use each month! Nuclear power is not cheaper. :)

I agree! Nuclear power is far from cheap considering the unknown and overlooked costs aassociated with its waste products. Its cheap for the utility because we pay for its clean up and disposal. NO NUKES!

:) I agree...cheap for them...high for us. Unfortunately they have a monopoly...you either use them or have no power. :( therefore...the reason I want to try the auto-vent openers.

The solar openers work just great. I haven't had any worries about the vents not opening or closing since I installed mine. I did put some hardware cloth over the vents on the inside to keep squirrels out.

The temperature at which they open is adjustable, and I have set my roof one a bit higher so that it opens before the one near the floor.

Thanks, marbs, that is just what I wanted to hear! Especially since you have the small HF greenhouse, which could overheat instantly if the vent didn't open correctly. They do say the smaller the greenhouse the harder to control the temps etc. Btw...I just popped over to see yours pics of assembling the greenhouse and it looks great. :) Bet it looks even better full of plants!

Now I can plan on adding several vents with openers on mine top and bottom to increase the airflow. I'm building a gothic arch 12'x24'x10'H (approximately). Thanks for the tip about the hardware cloth...I had forgotten about all our little four-legged friends around here. So you just made a cut (slot) in the hardware cloth to allow the opener to open to its fullest position?

I have an HFGH and use an Omnivent automatic vent opener on the ceiling vent and on a louver/shutter vent we installed next to the door. They contain a wax that expands/contracts as mentioned above. We have been having a record of 24+ days over 90 here in Minnesota this summer and everything is working great on the HFGH. We shopped around on the web and got both for just under $70 in total. Prices vary by supplier so worth checking around.

Thanks, Sandy. I'm glad to hear it works well on the louver/shutter vents too. I'm definitely planning on utilizing some openers in my greenhouse now. :)

Actually, Nuclear is much better than coal. A well-maintained Nuke plant is no more dangerous than a microwave oven. The problems of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl were outdated materials and lazy engineering. No air pollution, more plentiful resource than coal, MUCH cleaner for the air.

I suppose you would welcome the waste materials in your backyard then? You have no clue! Nuke power is cleaner? But it can kill quicker than you can load a gun! I'll deal with the acidification of lakes you can deal with radioactive ponds, spent fuel rods and the clean up when the utility decides they made enough cash and its time to bail. Then again, the Department of Energy and the NRC have all the answers! Ya, Right!
