troubleshooting a 15.5 briggs charging system

help, i have a 2000 dixon with a 15.5 briggs ohv. it is not charging, take the battery loose it shuts down. i have 7 or 8 Vac coming to the voltage regulator and nothing coming out.... where is the diode on these? is there any other testing to do before i start throwing parts on this?the regulator has two yellows and one red if that helps.... thanks in advance for the help

Engine Model & Type #'s can be useful.

The 2 yellow wires come from the alternator and connect to the Voltage Regulator.
To test the alternator, disconnect the plug.
Measure the AC voltage between the Yellow wires.
Depending on the alternator type, you should have either 28 or 40 Volts MINIMUM.
