Sound like it is going to cost money. There are talks about the gear box( transmission gear) problem of the FG100. The gear strip and is about $80 for the part. Even if you spend the money to fix the engine, you still have the potential gear problem. It is already over 4 years old. I would seriously consider buying a new one instead. Just hope you did not buy too many tines for this tiller because I don't think it will fit onto the new FG110.

Get the Mantis 2 cycle, it is cheap....$300. I don't recommend the Honda FG110 because I was told multiple times Honda do not back up their warrantee. They deny my warrantee on my trimmer. I am sure the FG110 is a very good cultivator, but the product is only as good as the warrantee. I bought direct from Mantis, I have very good service from them. They don't even give same service if you buy it from dealer. Then you have to deal with the dealer which can be painful from my experience.

Do a search on the FG100, the gear problem is pretty well talked about here and I have extensive talk about the Honda and dealer problems.

Thanks Yungman, I think you are probably right about fixing it even though I don't have to many hours on it. I have looked around at different mini tillers and I am undecided. I thought a four cycle would be more reliable with less problems but here I am. I had a Mantis 2cycle and had to mess with carb every spring. I also just rebuilt the carb on my Honda and bought the shop manual for it. So I am looking at Troy built, DR, Honda and Mantis. Even thinking of an electric one. Any thoughts?

Not troy Bilt. Because the engine is a half crank where the pull rope is at the front of the engine. You break the rope, you are done!!! Also this one don't have other tine option that I know of.

Honda FG110 is a very good one, My issue is HOnda not known to honor their warrantee from my experience and read comments from a few others.

I think you should just stay with your 2 cycle Mantis since you have it already. Carb problem usually are from old gas. You use Stabil in your gas? Make sure you use this and use at least 89 octane gas. When you put in storage, empty the gas tank, turn the primer bulb facing up and prime all the gas out of the bulb, empty the gas tank again. Then close the choke and try starting it to run the gas out of the carb. If you can, make the tine not touching the ground, squeeze the throtle all the way and pull start it to let the engine pull at the gas out of the carb.

Carb don't last if you run on old gas, no matter what brand. You are no going to have better luck even you buy the most expensive brand.

Don't know anything about DR, but as I said you got the Mantis already, safe the money to buy the dethatcher tines.

The Mantis 2 cycle engine is a very good one. It is the Echo 21.2cc engine which is a very well proven commercial engine. Other than it is loud as hack, there is no reason it won't last as long as the Honda engine.

I don't even want to use corded drill driver inside the house, I don't want to consider electric....but that is just me. If you don't want to go through the pain of maintaining the gas engine, and if you only use it once every few months, maybe electric is the way to go for you.

Let us know what you decided. If you do buy a Mantis, buy direct from Mantis, good support is everything.

I got my Honda when my Mantis's tines stopped turning even though that good little motor was working. When I took the cover plate off to look at the gears a couple of pieces came apart from the bottom of the housing. AT that point I didn't go any further with gear problems and a new casing. Seems an odd thing to happen but I do have a lot of rocks in the garden.

I should be better about stabilizer in my gas. It is hit or miss.

I have a DR brush cutter and although pricey it is a great machine. People who make big machines don't necessarily make good little ones though. Think I will start a new thread and see if any one has one.

What are you using your cultivators for??!!! Two broken ones!!!

Mantis do sell gear box. I don't know how much it is. They sent me one under warrantee. If the motor works, this would be the cheapest way to go rather than buying a new one. Better yet, check whether anything else other than the gear chip it's tooth, you might be able to buy that gear and change it.

I read a lot of good comments on Mantis, I don't think you can do much better.

Before you buy the DR, make sure they have the potential tines that you might want in the future. I am not going to respond to your new post so it will stay on top longer.

You ever look at Stihl Yardboss? Heard a lot of good things about this one too and they have even more tines than Mantis.

Also don't bother looking at Echo and Redmax cultivator. They are both Mantis in different color.
