Not sure what kind of chain you're sharpening but Stihl chains have a small mark on them which you should sharpen parrallel to. How many times are you stroking each link? Are you turning the saw around and doing the exact same # of strokes for the opposite side also?

Hopefully you have someone local that knows how to sharpen a chain and just doesn't play at it.

It sounds like you sharpened the chain unevenly. Your right side cutters are cutting more efficiently than your left cutters. Like driving a tank. You'll turn toward the side that is not rolling as fast, in this case not cutting as fast.

Keep practicing sharpening. It takes a little practice and patience. Keep your file sharp and use a guide to help you get the angles right.

Any chance you could have torqued the bar?

An easy way to test this out is to get yourself a new chain. If it does the same thing, your bar is probably torqued. Get or borrow a bar to test that out.

I find using one of the clamp on file guides helps alot. I've been sharpening for years and still don't have the hang of free hand.

After several sharpenings, or after rocking a chain, I turn to the grinder to get everything even again.

Sounds like the bar needs to be dressed, and the bar rails may need to be closed. The best thing to do is to replace the bar. The chains ware with the bar so they should also be replaced, along with the drive sprocket. Buy a sharpening guide and depth gauge as well, this will help you keep everything even and cutting properly. Remember every time you sharpen the chain, you should also flip the bar, this will help it ware evenly.

Sounds like a bar problem to me, I've been a chain saw "hacker" for years: using hand files, with and without guides, used Dremel with guide and have a low cost Harbor Freight grinder/sharpener. All have produced a usable blade, not like new, but cut much better than before sharpening. I also have two 14" saws and have exchanged blades between the two, i.e., run a chain on more than one bar and haven't detected any bad behavior.
