No sense worrying too much about global warming -- something it seems no one can prove and may just be the biggest joke since the flat earth stuff.

Instead, remember that government has three primary responsibilities: infrastructure, security, and laws. Well, we're looking at privatizing roads. We are contracting out security and some want to downsize our military further. We have effectively given unelected judges power to make laws.

So, when your sewer system can't be fixed, it will also be sold to a private company to pay for all the social programs of your city/county. Never fear. Your tax dollars are hard at work being converted from traditional government uses to paying for your neighbor's digital TV and new tractor!

Please, no "Global Warming" phrasing, the PC (and government) term is "Climate Change." Remember, words are a powerful thing and we musn't seem alarmist, LOL! A friend of mine who's folks live in Alaska says there are areas there where the ice/snow is actually "advancing." Hmm, wonder how that figures in on the scheme of things.

Tom, is that 3-ft. or 3-in. of water in your basement? I've noticed that sometimes when I use the feet symbol on this forum it comes out as the inch symbol. Hope you didn't have much damage. I still clearly remember my dad's basement getting flooded by surface water from a 100-year rain event in the "80's, turning the soil into a muddy fluid and actually backflowed through the septic system leaching field, then through the septic tank and emptying into his lower house level via the bathroom tub drain. Of course, nobody was home at the time to stem the tide. Nothing like having your septic tank rinsed clean and dumped into your house! We put in a backflow valve after that. Don't even want to think about that mess (get out of my head, get out of my head,...)

Sorry to say it is 3 feet of water had several sump pumps
running when we lost power. Got power back then the ground fault out lets kept tripping, so we couldn't keep the pumps running.

Finally got it all pumped out after about 6 hours and then on to salvaging stuff and vacuming up remainder. Have to get a very big dumpster in to throw all of the stuff away. Not too much was worth saving. Luckily we did have a lot of stuff stored in large plastic totes.

My son in law and I waded around in it in hip waders and carried the totes out first before they became filled too.

All in all a fun time was had by all.

Can hardly wait to see what is next!!!

Global warming is happening , hell even an oilman like Bush admits that ! It's the causes that are up for debate -natural phenomenom , manmade or a combination of both . And it's probably too late to address either with the increased polution from asian counties with their billions of people . All three running for president are bought and paid for bums and the only choice I'll have to make is between writing in Ron Paul or Jesse Ventura in November .

nine7xbam: I can't believe I'm getting into this debate because I know it's useless to try to change anyone's mind on either side of the issue. That said, there are many climatologists and scientists who strongly disagree with the global warming (a.k.a. climate change) premises being fed to us. It's just not reported because the news media doesn't want to hear that. It's much more fun to be an alarmist. I think we would be arrogant to believe that we can actually affect the climate of the earth. Global warming (and cooling too) is cyclical and has already happened several times in the past......and that was long before the arrival of man on the planet.

I thought this forum was about tractors. I did not see one thing about tractors. As for global warming it is ridiculous to think it is not happening. There are always going to be scientists on both sides because there will always be someone to disagree no matter what the topic, but if you educate yourself there is overwhelming evidence that global warming is taking place. Just look at some of the cities in Asia where they have to wear masks just to walk in the streets because it is too dangerous. Also, they call it global warming because it is global. just because it is colder in Iowa doesn't mean it is colder everywhere else. I live in NJ and it has been hotter than usual the last few weeks. As far as getting rid of the people on the east and west coast that would be a problem as if that happened the IQ of the U.S. would be that of a third world country (or Iowa). The same stuff coming out of the sewer that is in your basement is the same stuff coming out of your mouth. Hopefully with another Republican in office we can have another wonderful 8 years like the last 8. what a joke.

Tom Hoffman: I'm sorry to hear about the water in your basement. I know what it's like as I had a couple of feet of water in my home after a hurricane once. At least you don't park your tractor down there! ;-)

We have had more snow here in western Washington than any year since we moved here in 2002, the most recent being just a couple of days ago. It's been maybe 20 times this year when in years past it's been once or twice and sometimes not at all! We are still having below freezing temperatures which is also highly unusual. The good thing (I guess) is that the grass hasn't fully awakened yet so I've only mowed 4 times so far. It's been 1-1/2 to 2 weeks between mowings when in years past it was less than a week by now.

abfromnj, you've got to be kidding, right? You do understand the concept of "tongue-in-cheek," don't you? How old are you anyway, 14? As for talking only about tractors, his subject clearly states "OFF TOPIC." If you don't want to read about non-tractor related threads, please skip over the ones that have "OFF TOPIC" in their titles.

A person I'd guess has that right to believe or dis-believe. Will any of our beliefs be exactly the same 1 year from now or 10 years from now, I doubt it. I do think a wise person should have a sincere moment and consider their impact on their world around them and maybe just try to leave less of a footprint. Leave it better than you found it. That is a start. I choose not to digress into politics in this forum. I think tho, that a tractor forum is as good as place as any to discuss your environment. Maybe simply to raise awareness . Many people spending times on their tractors spend time caretaking their corner of the world.

Many of you may see my posts a lot in the various ope forums. Ope gets bad press on emissions for one thing, yet it is my livelyhood. I'm reasonably ok at many aspects of ope. Personally, tho, I cringe when a client needs to get set up to mow 5 + acres of grass. But it is commonplace. Will it always be? Me, I live in a modest home on a 1/3 acre lot that is losing lawn every year. Losing lawn to edible forest gardens, herb beds, rain gardens, chicken coops and runs, aquaponics and solar green houses. I also own a tree farm that I refuse to subdivide. It serves it's natural purpose.

So for the other people in ope, or others that wish to contribute- where do you think the ope industry will go in your lifetime? I would really like to know. $4.50 diesel by me. Nearly $4 for fuel. The posts have started about how much $$ to mow. Will that cost deter people from mowing? Probably not. But what is the real cost?

Oh, How true. March 8th my wife and I left Iowa for an extended stay in Florida to try and get warm. Eastern Iowa had been in a cycle of Rain, Ice, Snow every 3-4 days since before Christmas.

We just wanted to go south and get warm!!!

We hit tennessee day after they got smashed by a blizzard. Went on to Gatlinburg, there it was 50-55. Went to Savanah Ga. It was 60 and rain there.

Went down to Venice Fl. 60 and high wind. Couldn't dive because water was so turbulent you couldn't see your guages.

Ft. Lauderdale and Deerefield Beach wind off the ocean was 40+ mph and temp not above 60 or so.

Went over to Freeport Grand Bahamas for 6 days. Temp never got above 65 most of the time it was 50-55 and rain 4 days out of 6 it rained and had high wind.

Tryed diving one morning and the waves came up so badly once we were out and underwater, the dive master came down and called us in and it was almost impossible to get back on the boat as the boat was rocking in 6-8' seas.

21 days gone and only a couple of them did we see 70+ temps.

Got back to Iowa and we went right back into the winter rain ice snow cycle and we are still in it right now minus the snow. Still cold enough to freeze outside some nights yet.

I just want to be warm. I will gladly put up with 90+ temps and 90% humidity.

I am tired of being cold. I would like to break a sweat for a change.

Funny how different people have different prespectives. I actually had looked at the prospect of global warming getting rid of the East and West coast as a benefit, then I realized they would be moving closer to me (Missouri) and not just swallowed up by the ocean. Went out and planted 20 trees and started recycling. I'm even looking at solar heating now. : )

Here in NJ it was so warm lately the tent caterpillars came out and built their nests in trees with no leaves on them yet , I've never seen that before . Used to be the little bastards didn't come out until late June or early July , breaking that cycle last year by crawling out mid-May . What we need here now is a good frost to save the trouble of spraying their nests and the way the weather's been lately I wouldn't rule it out .

Just to clarify, my point with global warming, or climate change (since some people now concur this is a normal cycle), is not to say the earth doesn't go through temperature cycles. Rather, it doesn't seem that there is proof that this warming cycle is specifically related to humans or that humans could actually change it. We're a long way from the sun, from affecting the tilt of the earth, from changing volcanic action, from all sorts of things.

But I'd also be careful to protect people things. No sense suggesting that the east and west coasts are smarter than everyone else in between. That kind of arrogance and fallacious thinking leads to more lasting damage than many other things.
