temporary overwintering greenhouse?

I have a lot of plants on the patio, semi-hardy that I would like to keep but don't have room for indoors. I was thinking about throwing together a shelter to overwinter--I have a couple of old big storm windows, and a brick patio that is on the north east side of the house & sheltered from the wind (but would be mostly shaded in winter). Any spot in the winter sun would also be exposed to wind.

Has anyone here done a temporary winter structure successfully? And what plants did you succeed in keeping? How did you construct it?

I was thinking about maybe a few hay bales, using one wall of the house, and topped with the windows. Would this be enough shelter?
