John Deer R70

Hi Folks,

Long time reader, first time poster. I have a .40 of an acre and just recently broke my foot. I am in a walking boot at least for the next several months. I used to mow my grass with a push mowever; however, that is no longer an option. I've been looking at all kinds of options, including a Deere LA105 or LA115, a Ariens A20BH42, a Cub LTX1042, as well as various used riders. I was looking at a local shop this afternoon, and the gentleman had a Deere R70 that appears to be in great shape. It comes with a bagger and the original owner's manual. He is asking $400. I am not a small guy (6'1" and 265lbs). My three questions are, is the 8hp engine big enough to mow and haul me around, is that a fair price, and am I just better off buying one of the new entry-level machines above?

I've got an R72, which is same except has electric start. R70 is recoil start.

8hp is OK, but a little light. I'm 6'3" and 260lbs. If engine is fresh you'll be OK. Mine is somewhat worn and smokes a little. I still use regularly, especially in the fall because the R72 bags very well with high-lift blade.

The machine is probably from the earlt-to-mid 1980's (mine is 1984), so I think $400 is too high. I don't think and R72 would bring more than $300 - $350, and an R70 is less valuable because of lack of electric start. This is a 25 year old machine.

If guy will move on the price, I think the R70 would be a good machine. Certainly better design and manufacture than new equipment

Thanks. I really appreciate the feedback. I stopped at the local Snapper dealer and looked at the RER 28125BVE. I think I am going to get it. The price is $1,500, including setup and delivery.

Anybody have one of these? Do you like it?
