another wacky idea

Has anyone installed (or considered installing) a pet door to their GH? I have been thinking of this possibility. Wonder if anyone has done it. I would not be concerned in my area for unwanted pest to get in, just my kitties.

i have put a pet door on my greenhouse. it's a great place for my dogs hang out in during the winter, while we're at work. they love to sit in front of the heaters, first thing in the morning.

zubababy, do you mind elaborating on how you did it (where etc) and with a regular store bought kit or home made and if home made what did you use etc. Thanks!

I'm interested too, zubababy. We are a little more air tight than last year and I told hubs, if he doesn't put a kitty door in then they are going to create their own. They practically live in the GH over winter.

He was thinking about putting one in the door somehow, but not sure how he's going to do it. Last year we didn't have a door.... plastic simply hung over it and the cats could get in. So could the cold air. :)

For a home made jobie, I was thinking MAYBE a hard rubber mud flap? And for me, I would not want to ruin the asthetics of the main door, so maybe one of the side panels either on the side of the door panels OR one of the back or side wall panels? If I could cut out the polycarb panel to the size of the flap and secure it with some kind of aluminum frame material? Maybe even some kind of long hinge? so it would move back and forth freely with cat head pressure? When I wanted to block it, I could just put something in front of it?

i purchased my pet door. i don't think that it would be to hard to make your own. it's just easier for us to purchase one that was already put together. i think that there was a template for cutting the size out of the polycarb. there is less than a 1/4 inch gap at the bottom of the flappy door.

I found a small cat flap that I'm considering installing, but at the same time I rounded up supplies that would work to build my own.

And a guy at HD actually made a good suggestion, that is to use the piece of poly that is cut out AS THE FLAP. So I got material to build a frame that will be both on the inside as well as the outside of the greenouse. And some small utility hinges to secure the flap to the wood frame and then a magnet that will be attached to the bottom of the flap (somehow) as well as to the base of the frame so that when it's not in use it will stay securred by the magnet and of course when the kitties go in they will push it open and it should swing back in place. IF ALL GOES AS PLANNED.

    Belay that hard flap!

All it would take for a serious injury would be for a kitty to be partway through the door with the hard flap positioned at just the right place on it's back, then become frightened by something, try to back up and the result could be a sevely bruised or worse, broken spine.

I know that because it's exactly what happened to one of our small animal practitioner's feline patients. The poor creature had to be put down, but not before she suffered horribly.

Yes: I DO mean to scare you. I know how much you care for kitties. So do I.

Well the flap on the store bought kits are actually more rigid than the HFGH poly panel. so I dont think it will be a problem. These cats are skilled outdoorsmen and they will be fine.

Last night I tried to lock them into the GH because I had my heat on and it was supposed to get into the 20's and I didn't want the boogers to freeze outside (they are not my cats, just indirectly cuz I'm feeding them) and I didnt wan to heat the back yard and let my plants freeze. anyhoo...I got them all in, tucked into their beds, and put clamps on the front doors to hold them together. I came back later to check on stuff, did NOT move the clamps, but there they were the 2 of them sitting outside, playing.

I looked inside and out and could not for the life of me figure out how they got out? They must have pressed through the front door somehow. I never saw any panels out of out of wack. Beats me...

I think the flap of the same material from the GH will be fine. thanks for your thoughts though :)
