Maybe a piece of allthread with the same threads--ding up the end a little, then put the nut on the allthread. Reach up & hold in place while tightening the bolt. After it grabs, wedge a bit of wood to keep the nut from spinning till you can get it with a socket. Or duct or masking tape behind the nut before putting it in the socket & making it stick out a bit? HTH Don

Buy a good quality assortment of nylon zip-ties....I've used them hundreds of times for stuff like this. One good example is a common trailer hitch installation. Often, the existing holes in the vehicle frame don't make it easy to position and hold a nut in place inside the frame while trying to start a bolt from underneath.

Make a loop with the zip-tie, put your nut inside the loop and pull it tight. (This is where having *better* zip-ties becomes handy. The cheap ones like Walmart offers will often snap when pulled tight around something with a smaller diameter. Better zip-ties like an electrical supply place sells aren't much more expensive.)

Use the long pigtail of your zip-tie as a handle to position the nut where you need it. You don't *have to* remove it once you've snugged up the bolt, and if you have air tools it's often best to leave it there anyway. If your bolted parts ever need to be disassembled, buzz the bolt out with an air wrench and use the zip-tie to retrieve the nut. If you do want to remove it from the nut, wiggle it off or pry it off with a long skinny screwdriver....
