snow blower impeller

The outer edge of the impeller on my snow blower is any where from 1/8 of an inch to a little over a 1/4 of an inch from the cylinder it spins in. My question(s) are: Is this a normal distance or do other better built blowers have closer tolerances. Second has anyone experimented with adding, say, hard rubber extensions to the impeller to tighten up the gap?

Wouldn't that improve performance? My snow blower was made by "Atlas" (who ever the heck they are) and is a two stage model with a 5hp Tecumseh snow king engine.

Interested in everyones views and experiences.
