No, about the only time I have seen worms really active is when a bird is trying to eat it or someone is sticking one on a fish hook. Even when my daughter would pick them up to more closely watch them they did not move very fast.

Ashita, there are many different species of worms. Some are known for wriggling (like the common Red Wriggler used for vermiculture). Others behave like lazy ol' things.

I've been trying to think what I did differently this year to get worms in the pile for the first time, and I think it must be the handfuls of old leaves I put in. I read up here yesterday about worms, and seems they like to live under leaves and lay their eggs there.
