HELP 4 oxygen reg's blown ?

I used the torch and left the oxygen tank open,leaked empty; Exchanged bottles, connected reg. and pow! blew out, replaced with a spare reguletor, POW blew the diaphram, instantly. browed neighbors reg worked for two min's POW blew, dummie me hooked up a spare argon reg. POW of course :( carried the tank back to filling station. he hooked up a new Reg to the tank and all was well.....so's i buy a reguletor off ebay look's new victor" POW blew right off the bat.....Whats a soul to do now besides, stop spending $$$$$$$$$ on Reg's ? TIA

    I assume that you are using the proper regulator. It is hard to get the left-hand-thread acetylene regulator on the right-hand-thread oxygen bottle...

    Your regulator shouldn't blow out as long as you have the regulator knob fully backed out while opening the oxygen bottle -- slowly -- and are using clean regulators and fittings. If you have your regulator knob in and at working pressure adjustment while opening the oxygen bottle, this can cause a momentary high-rate-of-flow through the regulator. This will cause heat and possible combustion of any dust particles in the regulator. Also be absolutely sure that there is no dust, dirt, cobwebs, or oil in or on your fittings. These can also cause combustion in an oxygen-rich environment.

    I believe you are having a regulator combustion issue instead of a regulator mechanical failure.

    What does that mean ? I have used cutting torches for 30+ years never saw one regulator blow, and 5 in as many days tells me the bottle has trash in it ? How do I confirm this to the supplier ? Can't wait till i figure this one out, if I don't get blown up or broke LOL Thanks for your reply the last sentence kind of threw me :(

    I'm proposing that you may have contaminants in the system -- from the bottle or the plumbing out of it -- that are causing explosions which blow out the regulator. It is unlikely that four regulators in a row would blow out due to mechanical failures.

    Any oil, solvents, dust, dirt, cobwebs, hair, etc can cause a fire and explosion in the regulator in a high pressure, high oxygen environment.

    When turning on the oxygen bottle, always have the t-handle turned all the way out, then just turn the oxy bottle on slowly. After you have it turned on fully, then turn the T-handle slightly to open the guages. After the pressure equalizes, then turn the t-handle to the setting you want or need to use. When finished, turn off the tank first, then open the torch a bit, and let the oxygen bleed out fully, then shut the torch off. Same procedure for the acetylene, or what ever gas you are using!
    It is residual pressure left in the guages that makes the diaphragms blow out, when you first turn the tank to open! This because you didn't bleed off the pressure!
    I don't have that problem, because my 70 year old guages bleed down when left sitting for a length of time. I'm too long in the tooth to consider a new set! And, they work ok for me, since i don't use them much any more!

    I figure that if you have 30+ years of experience, you probably know what you are doing. If there is any question as to your methodology, rent a welder's safety video from a local library. Maybe there's a bunch of stuff you have forgotten or skip over due to so much repetition.

    As rusty and my first post state, make sure you have the regulators adjusted all the way out and lines bled. Always bleed your lines after working. A welder's safety video I watched stated that the oxygen regulator can reach in excess of a couple thousand degrees Fahrenheit internally --if the regulator is not backed out -- due to sudden air flow through the metering orifice.

    Always crack a new oxygen bottle valve open to blow any contaminants out of the fitting before hooking up your regulator to the oxygen bottle as well.

    Umm... let me expand:

    About cracking the oxygen cylinder: let me make it clear that I am speaking of opening the oxygen valve to blast out any dirt that might be in the plumbing out from the valve. CLOSE the oxygen valve before you attach the regulator though.

    Wise-Guy and Rusty I really appriciate your response's I have used the cutting torches for 30 years without a hitch, I later learned about all the dangers involved,but I absolutely NEVER expected what ixperinenced with 5 reg's in a row, unreal I think it's trash in the tank, and intend to confront the distriubiter with that problem as I ahve NO way to prove it :(
    PS I have talked to ten oweners of cutting torches and NOT one adimmited to backing of the regulators before using, and all of them have more experience than me, I specifialy asked that question. One duffus asked about the quality of Regs i was using they were all Smith.VICTOR Harris oxy=weld TOP of the line, Go figure that one :)

    I've had the same set of regulators for 30 years and usually I bleed out the hoses after use, but in years past, I never did, and never knew any better, but never had any problems.

    Please note: I didn't say that i bleed off the regulators before use! I said i bleed them down after use! I also said-my regulators are old, and gradually bleed off after use, and after the tanks are shut off!
    When i turn the tanks on, i open the oxy tank valve, then turn the tee-handle (or knob) on the regulator slowly, allowing the oxy pressure to build up slowly.
    When i'm done using the torch, etc., i turn off the tanks, back out the tee handles, (or knobs) on the regs, and the little bit in the hoses seeps out gradually! Or, i open the knobs on the torch. I lose very little gas or air, because a tank of oxy or acetylene will last me several years! Last time, this summer, when i went to get a new tank of oxy, the guy there said:" You still have those tanks? I thought you had given up using them!" I have them on a lease program. About every five years, they send a bill for $35 to renew it. Aww, i could have bought the tanks, but i have dealt with that company for nigh onto 40 years, and they have to make a living out of them, so i just kept the lease!

    P.S. One time, in a place where i worked, they never shut off the tee handles on the regs. so, one day, i turned the tank on, and the regulator blew! Wow!! did ya ever see a guy with a wooden leg run so fast? I was out the back door and half a block down the alley, before somebody stopped me! Whew!! Thought the world had come to an end! everybody got a good laugh out of that!

    Rusty14 Don't bother to run, I think the militaru expression was " if you hear it, it's too late somethiing like that :)
    Anyways I'm going to resolve this problem, My soul experiences have came from the retailers of supplys, so if they have been lying shame on them,I will add you can get a rebuild kits from
    VICTOR site. and if you can change oil in a engine you can rebuild a reguleter.The last owner tank i had exchanged was $15 for ithink 175 cubic feet ? but a retail tank would have been more I'm sure ? anyways if time permits I'm going to face/ confront the man that created this company and ask some pertianet questions ? So if you have any questions let me know.......I'm 60+ so welding is just a play theng but money is mojney right?

    giventake,had a new bottle blow two today,taking gauges and bottle back to supplier tomorrow to see if they can help diagnose problem, over 40 years in the welding business,guess I'm slipping maybe !!

    I found this thread looking for my own answers. At work I just had to take a section of line off the torch we have due to a hole in the oxygen side, it was 2 sections of hose with dual male couplers so I just popped off the bad line, reconnected the torch, boom, o2 regulator blew, put a new one on, worked fine for about 5 min, then the torch started burning funny then BOOM new regulator blew. I coulda swore I saw a spark when that second regulator blew, but It (thankfully) didn't blow up. I'm confused. Been doing it for years and never had any issues like this.
