Stihl 042AV chainsaw will not start

I am having great difficuly starting my 042 Stihl chainsaw. I put in fresh gas and a new plug. I checked the plug and I get a spark although it is not a massive spark. I reset the plug gap. I reset the gap between the flywheel and the ignition module and checked all the wires. I pulled the carb and cleaned it out. After trying to start fuel runs out of the exhaust. I even pulled the cylinder off, then I found fuel in the crankcase. I thought this may have come from the connection to the carb to operate the fuel pump, so I pulled the carb again and checked - it looked okay. Maybe the fuel in the crankcase is just from trying to start many times ? Any thoughts are welcome !

Put a new needle valve in, maybe a little crud under it. When it's severely flooded take out the plug hold it wide open and pull over untill raw gas quits coming out of the plug hole. Also helps to hold it wide open when trying to start it when flooded. Steve

Make sure the switch is OFF when doing what Steve suggests or you are risking a fire.

The 042 probably has a fully adjustable carb. Turn both high and low needle to off and try starting it. May need to dry off plug once due to all the fuel in the case. If it fires up for a few seconds between flooding the plug and getting no fuel to the plug you have verified the carb is flooding th system and it needs rebuilding.

Thanks for the responses ! Although I have not fixed the problem, I think I may be closer. I had the saw sitting on the bench with the fuel line to the carb disconnected overnight. I noticed today that fuel had come out for the fuel line and created a puddle of fuel in the housing below the carb. I thought - how can this be, as the fuel line is above the fuel tank ? I then turned to the breather line and pulled it off. The fuel in the fuel line then dropped. I tested the breater line and found it to not be a very good breather. Therefore I think that fuel was being forced through the carb with the saw just standing, probably just caused by the expansion/contraction of air in the fuel tank. I'm off to get a new breather and should know the results later !

Navada-Walrus, you are correct. Turning both jets off did let it start and run for a couple of seconds. Changing the breather did not fix it, although I think I feel better for changing it. I now need to find a Walbro WS3 rebuild kit ! Thanks again !

The breather and lines may need replacing anyway so go ahead and do them. Breather primary role is to allow air to enter the tank as fuel is used to prevent a vacuum from forming in the tank. A vacuum would stop fuel from going to the carb.

Newer emission engines don't allow tank pressure to vent out but your older 042 will do this as well as letting air in. Most time they will still hold 2 to 3 psi of pressure which is normal from fuel volitility, trying to turn to vapor. That is why your fuel line had fuel being pushed out of it. Totally normal. The inlet needle in the carb has to hold a minimum of 5 psi to compensate for tank pressure and yours is not. That's why shutting off the needles stopped fuel from flooding the engine and the verification of the carb needing help.

If you have a hand pump, When done repairing carb and prior to re-assembly, pump pressure through the ifuel inlet nipple. Pump in 5 to 10 psi. It should not leak down lower then 5 psi. Most will hold 8 to 10 or more but don't pump above 10 psi.
