Log Splitter Problem

I have an older Sears 5hp gasoline log splitter. It operates wonderfully in every respect except one.......it has an "automatic cylinder return" feature that doesn't work.

Operating correctly, you should be able to place the knob on the valve in the "return" position and the handle will stay there until the cylinder is fully retracted at which point the valve handle automatically kicks back to the neutral position.

The valve will operate like this (correctly) about 10% of the time but the rest of the time it simply will not stay in the return position by itself....it must be held there until the cylinder is retracted.

My thinking is that something inside the control valve is simply worn but I have no experience working with them. Is it possible an adjustment is available or is it time to take it in for professional repair?

Thanks In Advance
