My leaf-wacker died; I am sad

My Sears leafwacker (electric) just quit in the middle of processing (shredding) leaves. There was no jam-up of leaves although earlier I had had to clear a twig & leaf jam & hit the reset button. Reset doesn't work this time. I did check the power supply -- no problem at that end. It did smell a bit "hot" after stopping. My question (before I pay someone just to even look at it) is, Is it even possible to repair the motor? & at a reasonable price?, or should I just resign myself to using the lawnmower again?

If you are not quite sure what this product is, it is rather like a weed-wacker but with the whips at the bottom of a barrel-like receptacle which you can position over a garbage can--the leaves go in the top, get shredded & fall out the bottom into the can.
