Hey everbody! I'm new here, and need some advice on mulch stuff.I built me one a them sf gardens, and it's dryin' out real bad.Be right back, gotta get me another cold beer.

Alright,i'm back...Anyway,I need to come up with sumthin' to put on top of my garden to keep the moisture in,and was thinkin' 'bout hay. But,was concerned about some seeds comin' out of it,and growin' in my garden. And after all the hard work it took me to build it,that would upset me sumthin' awful.Anybody got any good ideas for me?

Oh! By the way, before everbody thinks i'm just playin' around- Figured i'd tell yall..I type the way I talk, and only went to the 7th grade.I love life and my momma and daddy take care of me,even though i'm 40 years old (I was born with some kinda condition that makes me not as smart as some people)but I do stuff for em to make up for it.I built this garden so we didn't hafta buy all them groceries no more.Awright then....Goin grabbin for catfish tonight!Talk to yall later

I just use old newspapers. then I throw hay on top. its best to use old hay.I think the seeds die by the time I use it. Just lay out the newspapers and soak them with a hose till they are good and soggy , then put the hay on top. I use about 4 layers of paper. it works great and it winds up decomposing back into the soil adding nutrients that make the soil even nicer.

I've been using a few sheets of newspaper covered with straw. Even with our 100+ degree heat lately, I'm having to water my tomatoes only once a week.

I use straw on top of mine and I sometimes get a few starters from the seeds, but they are easy to pull out.

You compose purty good fer somebody not as smart as some people, strikes me. Do ya compost as sardonic as you compose?

Lotta stuff werks good for mulch. Hayseeds are pretty easy to control. I use anything that comes to hand free.

Mr. BrownI don't know what that word means (sardonic)and Mr. greenguy, you need to learn how to talk right.Them aint words at all.If I didn't know any better I would say that you might be makin fun of me.I've been called stupid my whole life, but momma says in some ways i'm smarter than most people-they just don't know it.I drink alot of beer, cause it makes my headaches go away, and also helps me sleep at night.Ever evenin me and daddy sit on the tailgate of his truck drinking beer and wait for the deer to cross the road. They sure are purdy.Talk to yall later

Good ole boy, you seem real smart to me, and right handy. Headaches or not, beer will make you stupider really quick. Seen it happen many times. Good luck with the catfish - you're brave too.

Good ole boy- I've got a backyard vegetable garden that I keep mulched with wheat straw. Used hay before-it worked just fine as mulch, but then I had to pull Bermuda and Bahia grass out by hand when it broke down and seeded. Much happier with the wheat straw- the grains will sprout and you can harvest and eat them- nutritious!-or even brew your own wheat beer, but even if you just let 'em grow, they (the wheat sprouts) won't survive long in hot weather. So you don't have to worry about hand-weeding, which is the whole point of mulchin in the first place!
