digging dog

I put blood meal and bone meal in my hole to plant my roses. My dog and other critters of the night dig up the rose and eat the fertlizer. Is ther anything that I can mix with the fertlizer to discurage the digging?

Thanks

Yes---a gardener who has been up all night drinking coffee, hiding in the shrubs.

I did this too, last year & suffered a similar fate on one shrub. I put her back into her planting hole & fixed the soil & mulch around her & she recovered.

I tried that deer & rabbit repellant--the one with the dry flakes--and it smelled so putrid that it made the roses pointless. Who can enjoy a rose garden if they can't inhale?

I think the only thing I've ever seen recommended on here is Liquid Fence. I, however, have never tried it. I instead opted to put the fear of God into the neighborhood dogs.

Some years ago, my dogs ate an entire bag of Mills Magic Rose Mix. Probably couldn't find many things WORSE for a Dalmatian dog.

I quit using anything containing blood and bone meal on roses in the part of the yard the dogs can access. They don't trouble roses drenched with alfalfa tea, so that's our choice.

Glad to read this before I used any because I had planned to try that and I have one particular neighbor who has no respect and his large dogs get to go run everyone's yards. Hardly anyone has fences here but most people keep their dogs on a leash or in a pen when they are out including us.

I have a dog who loves to eat anything stinky, the only fertilizer I can use in the areas she has access to is alfalfa meal. But that only deals with the fertilizer eating part of the problem, we also have gophers galore and she loves to dig after them. I have fruit trees and she kept digging up the dirt all around them so I staked down some gopher wire on the ground in a circle around the trees and covered it in mulch and that stopped the digging.

I use concrete reinforcing wire on the soil surface. Works well for cats, possums, dogs, raccoons.

Watch using anything alfalfa if you live anywhere near the "wilds". Every rodent within miles will travel to your garden for alfalfa! Many dogs will eat it, too. Organics are great, but animals eat organics, period. Trying to put down the animal urines to repel the unwanted vermin can easily cause a "peeing contest" between what you apply and your dogs. Been there, too. I've had to eliminate anything attracting rabbits, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, skunks, squirrels and all the dogs from garden use. The omnivorous dog inside leaves the Garden Safe snail stuff alone. She'll eat citrus peel, paper towels, gum wrappers, and being a retired brood breeder, any poop she can find, but the iron phosphate she ignores. Her stable mate, who won't eat anything, LOVES the iron phosphate. Go figure.

Alas, I came home last night to damage from my own dog. She decided, arthritic hips & all, to somehow get over the fence in one rose bed & plop down on top of Hot Cocoa. I lost a 4 foot cane with about 20 buds about to pop.

I did the only thing I could--pruned off the long stems, dipped them in rooting powder, and crossed my fingers.
