I think the rug is too small. Once you add the larger ottoman the accent chairs need to be pushed back and ideally all those legs can be on the rug. I would go with something larger (hope you can return it!) and with a little color and pattern to it. I would do a green on the walls and find a rug with the colors of the chair in a suble pattern. If you're still having the wobbling problem you can build up the back legs a bit. Good luck!

P.S. I'm assuming, by the way, that you can't return the rug for a larger one. If you can, then I agree with ct design (who posted while I was still typing) that a larger rug would be ideal for the size and positioning of your furniture.

As for pattern, I would love one. But I decided on solid, as this is the 3rd rug I've brought home. I've had one heck of a time trying not to clash with those chairs... (this rug is returnable too).

I should have attached this 3rd pic with the first two. I'm afraid a bigger rug will encroach on our 'path of travel'. This pic is taken standing near the stairs that come up from the foyer.

And I should have added this rug is in the 8x10 category (actually 7'7" x 10'8).

Seeing it from this perspective I definitely agree with feeny to pull the rug out from under the sofa. You may even clear the tables which will sit flat and it will look far more balanced. You have a generous walkway, I think you will be fine. Consider a rug gripper pad, just under that corner where people may cut across. It's amazing how tricky rugs can be :)

Feeny, thanks for the comments as well. I'm attaching more photos - I've gone and grabbed the other ottoman, and pulled the rug forward. I'm not sure how I feel about this square ottoman now that I have it in place. I have restored the tables to their original positions (narrow side against the sofa, as you suggested).

I do think we need another piece of seating - I had been thinking chair & a half, perhaps love seat, but I'm having trouble convincing my husband that we need more seating when only 2 of us live here, and we have a huge family room in the basement with a huge sectional. (He didn't understand my 'need' for an area rug. "Why spend more money to cover up the money we spent on the hardwood floors?")

CT, green on the walls? I hadn't considered green. Any suggestions? I'm having trouble imagining it! There isn't any green anywhere on this floor. I was thinking of trying to pull a neutral wheat tone from a subtle stripe in the drapes as the house is kind of open concept and we need/want to carry the same colour from the foyer through to the kitchen.

I think this new placement of the rug is much better, and not just for the sake of the tables. It makes the seating area look more coherent all around. I'm laughing at your husband's area rug argument. You almost never see houses that are unbroken expanses of hard wood floors. Tell him the whole point is for hardwood floors to serve as the coherent background that connects separate rooms and seating areas defined by beautiful area rugs that make each space look warmer. (My husband leans in the other direction, always wanting to put more rugs on our hardwood floors. We compromise. He clutters. I declutter.)

While your room seems large enough to add a loveseat to the living room arrangement, I don't think your rug is large enough to accommodate another large piece. So if you decide to go in that direction, I'd definitely get a larger rug.

Finally, I probably prefer the rectangular ottoman/coffee table, but that is utterly idiosyncratic and personal. I just like rectangles better than squares (goes for tile shapes too), so listen to whatever the professional designers here might have to say on that issue, not me.

Lookin good. Must just be my monitor, I am seeing green in the print chairs. I'd still like to see a color in there, your sofa will disappear against wheat walls. You could paint the sofa wall a pretty green and carry the wheat elsewhere. Sw 6163 grassland is a personal favorite. If you don't really need the seating, what about a pretty storage piece against the empty wall?

Oh, and I like the square ottoman, I thought the other was too narrow.

Put me down for the rug pulled out and the rectangular ottoman. Add some green to the walls, add a nice piece of wood finish furniture to the empty wall, something unexpected!

I much prefer the placement of the end tables now that the area rug has shifted and my vote would be for the square tufted ottoman. I'm with feeny that another seating piece is not necessary.
