Small Tree for Zone 7

I live in Prospect, KY, Zone 7 and am looking for a small tree (12 to 18 feet) that will do well in amended clay soil in a raised bed in full southern exposure (hot afternoon sun in summer). I would love a Japanese Maple, but am afraid it would not do well in the hot afternoon sun.

The tree would be in the middle of a defined garden that has a shaped boxwood and Nandina border (Boxwood on outside, Nandina on inside).

Would appreciate any suggestions.
