Tammy, I'm not an expert - but if it were me, I'd probably cut it off between the first and second rooting places and put the top one in another cup. And then put more sand in this cup up to the roots. Nice problem to have ... :)

Wow, never seen that happen before! He must be happier than his name implies, lol. I'd be nervous about cutting it in two. I'd re-pot it and sink those roots deeper to cover them. If it keeps rooting up the stem though I don't know what to tell you.

Seil could well be right. The reason I thought maybe cutting is the right thing to do is that when I do softwood cuttings like that I cut between the nodes so that there is just one leaf per cut. It looks like the cutting Tammy rooted has two nodes, so I thought maybe cutting it to one node per stem would be the right thing. But Lord knows I'm wrong half the time and confused the rest, so what I said may not be right.

I'd put some good light potting soil (maybe loosened up with up to one half perlite) up to the top of the roots. Give them someplace to grow. Sand may not be ideal and maybe it's trying to find something it can grow in. At this stage, roots are more important than green stuff, so coddle as many roots as you can. Just a little green sticking out of the top is fine.

But I agree with the others. Great problem to have.

For the night, I've just taken it out of its "hothouse" (a clear rubbermaid bin with the top on that I used for rooting over the winter, and just haven't tranferred all of my cuttings out of it yet). I hadn't checked the hothouse in a few days and when I went to move the rest of the cuttings out, and into an area with better circulation now that the weather has warmed up, this is what I found! First time for me too! So....apparenty Grumpy roots QUITE easily! haha

Tomorrow I'll have to do something with it!

well...Grumpy was well rooted under the sand as well, so he has found his new home in a one quart pot of potting mix and perlite with just his top sticking out :)
