Decomposing material = brown?

I started a compost bin in late April and initially placed leaves and grass in the bin along with kitchen scraps. Our trees and our neighborÂs trees drop leaves year round  I didnÂt realize how much! After about 3 weeks the pile seemed to have more leaves than grass (both additions added weekly) and wasn't getting hot so I have just been adding grass and kitchen scraps (coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves, fruit and vegetable debris, and paper towels).

The pile heats up and I turn it weekly as I add scraps and grass to it. My question is does the decomposing material become the "brown" ingredient and is that why I havenÂt needed to add more, aside from the few paper towels? Or did those first 3 weeks possibly supply enough brown - there really were a lot of leaves.

Thanks to everyone here for all the information. I feel like IÂm the last person to consider composting and I absolutely love it! I am as amazed as anyone that I have taken to it so well.
