These days you can buy a pH meter for well under $100 that are accurate to within .1 pH unit (which is plenty good enough). As a rule of thumb, if it does not have standard solutions (to adjust the meter) it isn't worth having. You can generally use them for EC as well.

You won't find anything reliable for less than the cost of several professional soil tests. Meters are better than any of the kits but as indicated above, good, reliable meters aren't cheap.

My experience with any "soil pH meter" meant for home use is that they are not reliable. Tests comparing them with a soil sample, a sample of Vinegar, and a sample of a baking soda solution more often than not would give a pH reading in the 6.4 to 6.8 reading no matter which substance you tested, and they should not.

So, has anyone yet found a good reliable test kit to keep testing our container soils for a great price?

If so, please let us know. I really want to buy one...
