Self-watering ceramic pots

I have planted African violets in self-watering ceramic pots. It seems that the soil gets really dry even though they are in these pots. I sometimes provide a little water to the soil surface because of it. I have west-facing window and wonder if that is too much sun. The plants seems to do really well initially but don't look so healthy now. I have them planted in AV soil. I read that maybe i should mix the soil 50-50 with perlite to lighten it up. What do you think? It was weird that one of my pots transferred more water than the others and ended up drowning the violet. The rest seem to barely transfer any water at all. Any suggestions?
