Another cool combination

17 years ago

Here's a beauty I saw in the Niagara Parks' Botanical Gardens (just down the road) a couple weeks back:

{{gwi:254709}}

Cryptotaenia japonica var. atropurpurea (Japanese Purple Parsley), Carex elata 'Aurea', and Lychnis à arkwrightii 'Vesuvius'.

    Very nice!! I really enjoyed all those pictures. I thought the last one with the salvia and Lambs ear was most interesting. I usually clip those spikes, but I have to say they were used to great effect with the spiky salvia!

    Beautiful. I love mixing the textures of the foilage of plants moreso than flower color.

    Oh, I do envy the intense colors you get up north! Lovely pictures. Thanks for sharing!

    That is outstanding! Thanks for the plant names.

    Just wanted to post a small caution. The Cryptotaenia japonica var. atropurpurea (Japanese Purple Parsley) while a lovely plant (I use it in my gold hosta bed) does tend to reseed itself quite a bit. I generally pull out about half of them each spring. They pull out easily enough with a yank, but have to be watched. BTW, the Japanese Parsley would look smashing with some Bowles Golden carex and orange daylilies backed by Physocarpus Diablo that I have in the back "wet" garden (great Pix/great color suggestion Coolplantsguy!!) - but I hestitate because of the spreading issue.

    Fantastic combo! Nice color, texture and placement.

    Leslie, thanks for the caution, I just received that purple parsley and didn't know anything about it.

    The Canadian side of the falls is absolutely GORGEOUS, and they take such good care of the landscaping! Such pretty combinations right there on the side of the roadways.

    The black squirrels took me by surprise. I thought there were only gray or red ones.

    mmqchdygg, when I was a kid we used to say that black squirrels were reincarnated nuns!

    I used to go to the Canadian side of the falls every year when I was in college but I wasn't a gardener then. I had no idea what I was missing.

    Mark, lovely photos, gives us all some interesting ideas. Enjoy seeing posts from gardeners farther north than I am. I always think if they can grow it up there, it will be hardy here;)
