Ease of cleaning has a lot to do with the glaze on your porcelain. I have a slate-look porcelain tile with a matte, non shiny glaze and a rough texture. Its color variations mask dirt well and it vacuums beautifully BUT it cannot be damp mopped due to the texture. I give it a good scrubbing with a brush twice a year. If you are concerned about ease of cleaning, test your tile sample with a damp cloth to see if the texture allows for an easy wipe down.

I use a steamer to clean this type of tile. It's quick & doen't require harsh chemicals.

Alternately you can use lemon juice and salt that works very well .

I think the idea of testing the cleanability of a sample tile is very clever.

I agree with Sheryl. We have uneven textured tiles on our floors and the 1/4 inch grout lines are impossible to keep clean. The tile itself is easy enough to keep clean with a steamer, but we are actually in the process of sanding out the old to replace it with color (replacing the tiles is not an option as they extend through hallways and powder room.) One other thing, if this is in the kitchen, invest in a good broom. Any glass dropped on this floor will instantly shatter and skitter everywhere, sometimes bouncing as far up as the countertops.

Can any tile be laid without a grout line, or does it have to state that it is rectified?

Porcelain is the best for floors, very resistant and easy clean. You will have to use a brush sometimes, but good choice.

Rectified tile is laser cut versus machine cut or stamped. I would check with the individual manufacturer about laying without grout. A rectified tile will allow you a 1/16" grout line, very small and you can choose a high performance grout which is a fabulous thing. They have the sealer in them and are stain, mildew and crack resistance. Offered by tec and custom brands) Also I agree to clean a highly textured porcelain steam or something with some grit are your best bet. Good luck!
