Does this annoy anyone else?

Ads on this site that take up half the page. Makes it so not many messages are on each page.

Don't see any ads, but then I use Firefox browser...

Deanna that used to do more than annoy me. I was thinking that gardenweb.com just wasn't worth it for a while there. Then I also started using Firefox (which I now use exclusively) and have the script killer installed. No more ads.

I use IE6 and Google Popup blocker and never had any ads. Somehow though, when I'm not logged into GW, a popup or two do get by the blocker, but then I log in, and nothing. I've never seen those huge ads that so many complain about.

And you installed the add-on? That's what stops scripts from running. The script killer. I made a post last year about it but I'm having trouble finding it now. If I find it later I'll give you the link.

I've installed Mozilla's Adblock Plus, and have no trouble with ads at all.

I didn't download script killer, but I did download adblocker plus, and I still see ads on this page. Like at the top of this page is an ad for the weekly Target ad, and to the side is an ad for Samsung french door refrigerator. Not popup ads, but ads on the web page. You all don't have those on your webpages?

I just went into adblocker plus and clicked on "update all subscriptions", and the ads disappeared. I guess the problem is fixed now! Don't know why it wasn't working before???

You mean you can get rid of ALL ads? Even the banner ones at the top?

    linnea-

Yes! Go to mozilla.com and download the Firefox browser, then download an add-on called adblocker plus. No more ads!

Kate - I saw the add-on "No Script", but when I read about it, it sounded like something that would be better for someone more computer savvy than I am. However, I was tempted to try it because it sounds like it would make one's computer a lot more secure.

It is so effective at removing ads, totally, that I actually feel a little guilty. I mean, ads are what pay for the operation of these forums, right?
I wouldn't mind the ads if they weren't interfering with the posts and pictures and slowing the computer down.

I don't feel guilty at all for blocking the ads.

A few years ago when this site underwent new management, the ads were horrendous. Flashing things everywhere, huge, screen sized pop ups every time you changed pages, moving banners and so on that made it just about impossible to use.

This new management clearly didn't care about the people who were trying to use the site, just about making money off the ads, which is to say off of us, since you can't sell ads for sites without any traffic. GW really changed after that as most of the old-timers left and traffic has never been as busy since.

But the ads only make money if the people click on them. I've never clicked on one, so they're not losing money by my eliminating the ads.

Complaints about ads are a perennial topic. Perennial. Get it?

This is the perennial forum. That was a joke.

    I get none, BTW.

Deanne the script killer is super easy. If you ever want to explore it email me at kathrynfisher@netzero.net.

Mozilla Firefox is the best. I learned about it a few years ago from someone on this forum and I'm so glad.

    Proud,
I wouldn't exactly call it slow. There are new postings every day. I've see sites where it looks like no one has posted for weeks! But this site (and I'm betting any others)is slowest this time of year. People go on vacations, have parties, spend more time outside, etc. so less posting does happen than any other time.
