winter sowing bulbs

This may seem like a really dumb question...but here goes...Can you winter sow bulbs...tulips, scilla, muscari, chionodoxa. I am in a zone 5 and the ground is completely frozen now. However, the local grocery store had bulbs on sale at less than half price...too good to pass up....the bulbs look good still. Should I give it a try or just plant them out in the fall as we would normally do? Thanks in advance for all your suggestions and advice.

I tried last year, I don't think I would again. If you use a really deep planter, like 18in deep or more, maybe. But otherwise, I wouldn't. I did Hyacinths and perennial Gladious, and onions last year, along with something else I can't remember the name of. All but the onion bulbs turned to complete mush. I had them in Kitty-litter containers that were filled to about five to six inches of soil.

I let a container thaw inside last night, popped some bulbs in this a.m., and covered with dirt and some snow. I'm hoping it will work.

I would have just put them in the fridge...that prolly would have been best, BUT since you already popped the bulbs in there, I would keep the container inside....just water when it dries out...

definitely in the fridge or a cool garage that doesn't freeze (2-10*C) Bulbs cannot take the thawing and freezing. The water in their tissue would freeze (equivilantly, frozen water in human tissue=frost bite)freezing and thawing would ruin the tissue structure and your bulbs will turn to mush. It's a different story in the ground because it doesn't freeze down there (4-6" deep). Above ground containers are exposed on all sides to wind but the ground only has one surface exposed. seeds haven't grown yet and the water content inside them is relatively low in comparison. Yeah for bio class :D
