I usually feed my Plecostomus his algae pellets in the evening, when I turn the lights out. They can be very shy, and don't like bright light or big movements of people in front of the tank.

I agree with Redwood... I put algae wafers in right before I'm turning off the light, too.

Ditto on the night time feedings, Plecos are night feeders and find their food mostly by smell. We have a foot long fella at the store I work at, he lives in our 220 display tank, and he has no eyes, he was kept in a tank of Mbuna and they attacked his eyes and ate them! Even being totally blind he can find his food and eats the algae discs and sheets of the pressed algae, even some of the pellets tossed in for the other fish. Put the pellets on a flat surface and check in the morning to see if them are gone. Some can be picky about food and you may have to experiment with different products to find one he'll eat. Try blanched zuccini, romaine lettuce and even peas too.

I second ChrisH's comment about the blanched zuchini. Many people don't realize that Plecos need food other than algae in order to thrive, which I believe accounts for why these fish sometimes die in unexplained fashion. That is, I think they starve to death in some tanks. I feed my 5 inch BristleNose Pleco a slice of parboiled zuchini every other day. I just boil it enough so that it will sink, and he wastes no time eating it up.

My pleco would always leave the algea wafer rotting for days... and eat the wafers i put in for my cat fish instead, so i stopped feeding the algea wafers, and just put in the ones for bottom feeders and their all happy. BTW

I came across something one time and was very glad that i did.

Buy a head of lettuce. Take the outer-most GREENEST leaves off and boil them. Rinse them and let them cool. Then boil them again. Let them cool.

Feed the pleco at night and in the morning, you'll see just ribs left.

They seem to love it and thrive.

Boiling lettuce doesn't smell to good. But it's worth it!
