Just my 2 cents (being a newbie), I would put that soil in a shallow container and spread it out kind of thin, so that whatever seeds are in there won't be burried too deep and possibly rot. Of course this makes more work for you because when they sprout, you'll have to transplant them into a bigger container (I would think) for proper root development.

Just a thought!

I'm sure they will be fine. Put the containers on the ground.

What wind,eh? The skys are very beautiful, especially from the N train over the River on my way from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Half my containers were blown off the table too! Now I've got everything on the ground, or tucked onto to chairs, in plastic baskets! standing out there reminded me of a poem from childhood:

Wind on the Hill

No one can tell me,
Nobody knows,
Where the wind comes from,
Where the wind goes.

It's flying from somewhere
As fast as it can,
I couldn't keep up with it,
Not if I ran.

But if I stopped holding
The string of my kite,
It would blow with the wind
For a day and a night.

And then when I found it,
Wherever it blew,
I should know that the wind
Had been going there too.

So then I could tell them
Where the wind goes...
But where the wind comes from
Nobody knows.

Lovely poem. I have been thinking about the wind too. Do you think duct taping five or so jugs together would keep them from blowing around?

Floodthelast,

I definitely think there's strength in numbers. I say, MacGyver it...figure out a way to keep them grouped (tied) together while still having drainage, air, and access to light. Taping them together might just do it :-)

thanks everyone. that's what i did, place them on the ground. i guess i'll take my chances and hope for the best.

We get some horrible winds in winter and for that I've always placed containers on the ground. All are usually fitted into nursery carry-out trays pretty snug.
