You're in my zone.
Have you done broccoli and lettuce before?
I'm inexperienced w/vegies, and wondering - I think these cold weather ones can go in the ground as soon as the ground can be worked?
And until then, stay in the container?

thanks,
ellen

Hi Ellen,

This is my first year with WS veggies. I did the broccoli, lettuce and cauliflower in early Feb. because they're listed as liking the cold. Last year I did broccoli (started inside and planted out in late March/early April) and it never formed heads so I wondered if it went out too late. This year I figured I'd do it by WS and let it set its own timetable. Now I don't have to worry about whether it's too cold to plant them out when they develop into true seedlings. They'll go in as soon as I can get my early veggie plot ready (it's still under a couple feet of snow so it might be May before it's ready. But at least the seedlings will be developing outside at their own preferred pace.

We'll see. As Trudi says, it's a learning experience. I'll keep you posted on how they do.

yes, I'm learning about the vegies.
Last year I sowed lettuce, kale and broccoli in early feb.
They came up in 12 days!

but when they became stalks they got eaten.

This year I am giving them away to people, as I have nowhere for vegies where they will not eaten.
I do not mind that the critters feed themselves, but they don't leave anything for me. :(

Our back yard is about an acre so space isn't a problem. It's also fenced so critters aren't really a problem, but that's more because of the three dogs. We do have one persistent (stupid) rabbit, and the dogs, especially the great dane, go nuts when they see it in the yard. They haven't caught it yet (thank god -- i don't need the wild kingdom enacted in my back yard) but I think they chase it often enough to keep it from doing any real damage to the plants.
