I am not an expert, by far, but I really don't think that there is a difference. You might direct that question to someone like Dewey Fisk (he has a website and would probably email you back) who is an aroid expert.

Its a "dirty little secret" of the plant trade that vendors will frequently "rename" cultivars of plants or "tack on" a name to a plant species to make people think that they are getting a completely different "new type" of a plant, just to sell more plants.

Look at the Xanhosoma "Lime Zinger" as an example...I have seen it over the years as X. "Chartreuse", X. "Big Muffafa", X. aurea...all the same plant.

The variegated Alocasia cucullata is also sold under the name "Moon Landing".

Usually the person who discovers a plant, hybridizes a plant or gets it over to the US from some exotic locale for distribution gets to "name" the plant, but plant names that aren't registered (and even those that are) can always be "renamed" so to speak.
