I wintersow both.

* For the cabbage, when transplanting, plant them deeply up to their first real (not seedling) leaves or even a bit deeper. Otherwise, they fall over as they grow.

Cabbage is an excellent candidate for winter-sowing because it is so cold-hardy.

For cucumbers, I always direct sow once it warms up, usually during June. They require warm soil and temps, and when direct sown in place they grow fast. Some people have said that direct-sown cukes will catch up and surpass transplants in growth.

When do you wintersow cabbage in jugs? Can you treat them like tomatoes?

You can probably winter sow cabbage around now. And I agree with terrene about the cucumbers. There's no real advantage to starting them ahead of time.
