Here are a couple good suppliers of tree pots.

Stuewe is a good source.
I've made bottomless 'Whitcomb' pots for growing nut trees/oaks by cutting off the top and bottom of half-gallon milk/OJ cartons and setting them on a raised rack with small enough mesh that all your root medium doesn't wash out. Accomplishes the objective of having any roots that exit the bottom of the medium 'air-pruned'.
Cheap, effective, but less handy than plastic pots.

so when you are saying mesh you meen like window screen? Please when you get the chance give me an example of the type of mesh you use. Thanks.

Two examples I use, treenut:

hardware cloth with like a 2 x 6 or 2 x 8 frame.
I use two overlapping layers of the finest/smallest
holes available. That stuff is strong.

tall sturdy flats with
small holes intended for these tall pots.

Dax

i have seen cut up potting media bags.. thin sheets of plastic used to hold the media in the pot ...

its only really needed until the media settles into the pot.. and the tree puts some roots into it ....

that said... without an isolated population.. you do understand that whether or not you get white oaks will depend on the pollination of the tree you are using as momma ....

He will get "white oaks" no matter what. Getting Q. alba might be a different story.

I have enough "white oaks" I want Q. alba. That is my objective. I will be collecting acorns from mature tress from a local University that have the trees planted every where. They are approx. 25-75 years old. Can you explain about the pollination? never heard of this on acorns before. thanks

Treenutt,

Many oak species are notoriously promiscuous (they easily and frequently hybridize with other oak species), and in an area where various types of oaks are planted (most urban settings), hybrids are frequently the norm.

Sometimes it's difficult to obtain pure Quercus species from nature except in areas where they are geographically isolated from potentially hybridizing partners.

I'd bet Dax grows many times more stuff than I do this way, but I'll add to his recommendation that sometimes old-fashioned (aluminium/aluminum) window screen is used for bottom air pruning. One could also use a course hardware cloth to better support a screen-wire mesh, if the finer mesh was deemed more suitable to contain the growing medium.

Click on the link below, they are very easy to use.
