Hi, all! I am requesting specific information on pleaching, plashing, or grafting trees. I have searched the Internet, using Google, YouTube, various university sites, and the GardenWeb archives. I have looked at every applicable gardening book in my local library system. Among the dozens of keywords I have searched are "pleached," "Pooktree," "espalier," "topiary," and "tree art." Folks love showing off the finished product, but I cannot find any resource that gives more than the vague instruction of "tie the branches together," sometimes with the addendum of "create a small wound first."
I have been inspired by the art of Axel Erlandson and wish to attempt something along the lines of his work, see attached picture of his "basket tree," which was created by grafting 6 sycamore saplings together 42 times. I don't need to do something quite this complicated to start, but I want to know exactly how one goes about performing such grafts, or inosculations. I would like to work with American Linden trees, as they are the size I'm looking for, do well in my climate and have thin bark that naturally lends itself to inosculations.
Can someone provide me with some more specific information? Any resources I may have overlooked? The ancient Romans did this--I know this knowledge isn't lost, but it seems to be very heavily guarded.
