Custom root from Vintage?

Vintage's website says they can do custom rootings of some roses. They have Alice Hoffmann, with which I fell completely unreasonably in love with someone (riku?) posted pics. So I asked to be notified when they were propagating it.

Has anyone bought something this way from Vintage? What were prices like? How long am I likely to be waiting?

I think a custom root request is $40 or so.

I personally would sign up on their website to be informed when the rose is available again. Some stock goes in and out of availability throughout the season, or be sure to check in Dec/Jan to see about newly rooted stock.

I got a rose, some years ago that was custom propagated...it took about six months...I did it, because it was a rose I really wanted, and I had some credits I needed to use...right afterwards it was readily avaliable...figures...

Usually, they have a lot of new inventory in September. You might check back around September 1st. Then they seem to have another release in October/November.

Unhh . . . Their website seems to indicate that the rose in commerce in the U.S. under that name is 'Old Blush.'

Jeri's right. Also, in their 'Book of Roses' they mention that Old Blush and Archduc Charles are sold under the name of Alice Hoffman. The Vintage website does list that they have Old Blush available. I would call Gregg and ask him about this issue of distribution names.

nickelsmumz, are you familiar with either Old Blush or Archduc Charles (also spelled by many references as Archduke Charles)? If not, do some googling around on the different sites and see if one looks like what you fell in love or at least a reasonable substitute, LOL. If either of them looks like "your" rose, Antique Rose Emporium carries both of them and they are both "mainstay" Chinas in some areas.

OK -- the text on Alice Hoffmann on the Vintage site says:
"Synonyms: see Old Blush for the rose sold under this name.
see Old Blush, China, for the rose sold under this name."

My interpretation is that some other vendor(s) sell Old Blush under the name "Alice Hoffman." Vintage does NOT seem to think they are they same. The descriptions are different. AH says:
    Availability:
Available as a Custom Root only.

    Color: Blush Pink
    Color Quirks:
    Scent: Moderate
    Into Date: 1897
    Introducer: Hoffman
    Rebloom: Good
    Growth Habit:
    Class: China
    ****

    Old Blush says:

    Availability:
    Bands: $12.50 per Band

    Color: Rose Pink
    Color Quirks:
    Scent: Light
    Into Date: 1759
Introducer: Intro to Sweden from Orient
    Rebloom: Rapid
    Growth Habit: 1
    Class: China

Likewise, the description of Archduke Charles is different again:

    Availability:
Available as a Custom Root only.

    Color: Rose Pink
    Color Quirks:
    Scent: Intense
    Into Date: before 1840
    Introducer: Laffay
    Rebloom: Good
    Growth Habit: 1
    Class: China

In the HMF pictures, the color of the flower of AC is quite similar to that of AH. Old Blush does not seem to have the consistent outer ring of dark pink petals. I definitely would not want Old Blush.

If Vintage were selling Old Blush as Alice Hoffman, why would they be describing the two differently and listing one as available and one as custom root?

    Am I totally missing something?

By the way, I have only seen pictures of Alice Hoffman, and they were posted by Riku, who seems to have the real thing -- only 24" tall. Both Old Blush and Archduke Charles seem to get many feet tall.

I have Old Blush and Archduke Charles.

My Old Blush isn't very tall, but most are. I think I need to fertilize mine more.

Archduke Charles is new this year, and is absolutely beautiful.

Antique Rose Emporium and Chamblees sell both roses, but I don't see Alice Hoffman.

Well, they don't ship to OR, but perhaps you could trade with someone who has ordered [will order?] her from Appalachianrose.com?

They offer custom root for $30 prepaid, including the rose and shipping.

Of course, I haven't a clue if she's really the one you want because I am not good at rose identities, but they list her separately and give a pic.

Here is a link that might be useful: Alice Hoffman listed at appalachianrose
