I have. My wine club (3 families) produces some 250lbs of "cake" a year, though we don't brew every year. It is difficult to thoroughly mix with browns when it is pressed properly, it is just too compacted. But it is a good idea to mix and compost at high temperature, because otherwise you get billions seedlings. I get some seedlings, having made the effort to compost it. It is clearly a rich fertilizer.

Composting the waste material from wineries has been an accepted practice for hundreds of year, much the same as composting the waste from cider making or most any other such process. That waste is organic matter and any organic matter can, and should, be composted. Because that waste has not yet fermented, and probably will not in the compost bin it will not make your worms drunk. Understand, however, that if there was enough alcohol in that waste (you waited too long to compost it) the alcohol could kill your earthworms.

You can also feed the stuff to some livestock.

Good grief, the thought of throwing all that in the dumpster makes me sad. Good work!

I have not done this with pressed grapes but with apple pumice. I think you may find it needs less browns than you think. Also, my suggestion would be to try to get some compost worms in there and let them go to town. Just have a layer somewhere that they can hide in/retreat to if there are conditions they don't like. Eventually the pressed grapes will get to the point where the worms will be happy and they'll move through and make beautiful compost. Of course, browns won't hurt, but you just may not need to worry about getting it perfect unless you're in a rush.

There is always second wine.

After that, it becomes compost.

Grape pomace needs more browns because a lot of it is seeds. The seeds that rot do release a lot of N. It is true that it would be best to let a bunch of chickens go through the pile first, but lacking chickens, it is best to use. But hot compost! or expect a lot of weeding.

The linked article below may be of some interest to those planning on composting grape pomace.

Thanks. Interesting from that (to me) was that with the stems, pretty good C:N ratio. Issues are acidity and fermentation (moisture/lack of air).
