The "bite marks" are not typical of the kind of damage weevils would do - more likely caterpillars. Additionally, weevil damage to the leaves takes place in summer, not spring.

The damaged part looks to have suffered typical winter damage from cold, sun and wind. This easily could have taken place after the warm spell.

You also need to be cautious about over-watering. Rhododendrons need a lot of oxygen around the roots. Water logged soil can cause much damage, even death.

At this point, prune out the obvious dead parts back to where you see green cambium tissue. It willl recover with time.

This kind of die-back is typically seen during a dry winter. It seems to be winter drought damage. Plants even need to be watered during winter if the ground thaws out and is very dry. A very dry winter with cold winds and winter sun can cause this die-back. It can also happen during summer drought.

Another problem is fertilizing during the summer or fall. This causes new growth to go into winter without hardening off. Never fertilize after June. I recommend, if you fertilize at all, do it around bloom time with a good product like HollyTone and at only half the rate on the package. Also, only once a year.

Thanks for the comments and info. I was negligent over the winter. The other two Rhodo's I have(now I have 4 altogether. Addictive things!) get wind break, but the third didn't. I haven't replanted the damaged one yet. The pictures I took were out on the lawn so it doesn't drown in the watering. I should be replanting it within the coming weeks. I have been only fertilizing once in the spring just before bloom time. The leaves marking seem to be that of a weevil because I have not seen caterpillars, but who knows Thanks for the help!
