Photos are great in a hallway or on a wall where you don't have a large piece of furniture underneath.

Try overlapping some of them so they are not so "perfect". I love have photos resting on a shelve! Great idea. Best of luck!

If this is a living room, move them to more private locations like the hall, master bedroom or family room. In reality, family photos are never very interesting to anyone but the family, so they are best left in areas where guests aren't forced to admire them. Similar situation to showing your vacation pix - no one is really interested if they aren't relatives. You can put an "L" stand at the foot of one or two small pix and set them on side or sofa tables. Just keep it to a minimum so the room doesn't look like your "brag book."

I think it looks very nice, natural and personal. The only problem I see is the large difference in the heights of the lamps. Since you can't lower the one on the left, can you put some books under the lamp on the left? Or even use a different, taller lamp on that side?

Thanks for the help. I am going to be moving this room around very soon. I am putting a love seat where this large sofa is now. I think I will take the photos down and create a gallery elsewhere. Do you think I can use this mirror above the love seat when moved or would a piece of art look better. I tend to be too plain. So art is hard for me.

Mirrors should reflect something beautiful or interesting and should be no more than 75% as wide as the piece of furniture under them.

I like to see family photos. Don't find them too personal at all.

I haven't made a final decision. I am in the process of looking for an area rug for the space. Once I get that, I plan to rearrange the furniture. When I get that into place, I will determine the fate of the pictures;). Lol. Additionally, because the room is so dark, my husband said he would install recessed lighting. So, this process may take some time until I get all of these things into place. Anybody have area rug tips?

I prefer area rugs to be 12-18" wider than the sofa and then slip them under the first 1/3 of the sofa. Use painter's tape on the floor to get a plan, and if you can't match that size with a ready made rug, go up to the next size rather than to a smaller one.

All your colors are on the neutral-to-cool end of the scale. You can go one of two ways with rug and artwork. (I agree with previous posts that family pix should be on a secondary wall...they are by their very nature, too "busy/fussy" for over a main seating area.). Way one: get a rug with warm colors and some "movement" to it. Oriental, or modern swirly pattern would be gorgeous. Then add additional pops of color in pillows, artwork that you pull from the rug. Way two: stick with the cooler colors, but get away from neutrals...pale blues, icy whites, even a green would work well with the walls. Same advice goes for the rug, but in the cooler colors. You have a very nice space there....just needs that final Pizzaz. Buy what you love...and you will see that when you do, it will all fit. But don't buy on impulse...it's better to wait than waste your money on something you will regret next week.

I definitely think I need to use something with pattern on the floor. I was thinking a light background to lighten up the space. I love the idea to use painters tape on the floor for sizing. The other issue with this space is that the entryway opens directly into this room. So I am trying to create a faux entry space in addition to this seating area. This is obviously a small room and I don't want a cluttered look with coats and shoes as I have two little ones. I want it all hidden and "neat". Lol.

An area rug should be large enough that all main furniture pieces front legs rest a minimum of 3" over the edge of the rug. Larger rugs are more expensive but they really make the room. When you put a rug that is too small for the space in place you actually make the room feel smaller, I see this done so often and it's the wrong approach to finishing a space. I'd rather you have no rug until you can save $ for the right size. When it comes to containing everyday items such as coats and shoes/kid clutter it is a difficult task in a small space where the room isn't designed for this. Today's market offers many ready made pieces available to hold shoes/coats. If you can't find the piece to fit your needs then hiring a professional may be just what you need to check this headache off your list. Best of luck!
