Perseverance Pays Off

Once again, a blanket Thank You to the man (I think it was) who told me my hybrid perpetuals, Reines des Violette and Baronne Prevost required acid conditions. They have had blooms off and on all summer and this has been one of the hottest and driest in a very long time. I took a picture this morning to show the green foliage. I am pleased. What do you all think? Do I need more iron or acid?

I don't think that lovely rose needs anything but congratulations from us. I had no idea that some (or all?) HP's required more acid conditions. I'm encouraged that RdV did will for you in a hot, dry summer (the only kind we have here) since I've been considering this rose for a long time but just didn't think it would do well for me. A friend had a bloom on her new RdV and I was enchanted with its appearance and fragrance. Do you have yours in full sun or afternoon shade? Would you tell me a bit about its growth habit?

Ingrid, I have had the rose for about 3 years now and it has looked absolutely awful. So much so, that I was going to yank it out. I have added both soil sulphur and iron to the soil. It is growing on the south side of the garden fence and gets full sun. I do keep it under mulch. I also watered it regularly the first year.

This year we started out with normal rains and then it got hot and for almost 49 days we had 90 plus temperatures with almost no rain. I might have watered it a couple of times when I had the hose in the garden but nothing in the last month. I have sprayed a few times for disease but nothing for the last couple of months. We had an attack of killer Japanese beetles all summer long and I did spray for those. They won and I got very few perfect blooms because of them.

I also lift the hay mulch and toss in coffee grounds and banana peel now and then....not on a regular basis.

I have it next to Baronne Prevost that gets the same treatment.

Both roses send out long canes that I tie to the fence but have very few thorns. I wouldn't call it a shrubby or bushy rose. I will try to remember to take a full length shot for you tomorrow.

Gldnol; that rose is healthy and needs nothing else. RDV does love it hot!
