We need design help for lights in Kitchen and Bar!

Hi,

We need help choosing final lights for kitchen and bar renovation!
In Kitchen, we will be installing an "S-shaped" monorail centered over the island with 3 hanging lights. We were thinking maybe small cylinders with clear crystals??

In Bar, which is right adjacent to kitchen and overlooking great room, there are rough-ins for 3 pendants. We need help choosing pendants.

We want to make sure the design is not too busy, and that the bar is a little masculine. Would Edison bulbs with clear cylinder glass work in Bar?

We like "transitional" style (we think)!

Hello,

Love the idea for the island. I am thinking that you would be best with cans at the bar area. You could do the 4" cans with adjustable lenses. The reason why I feel that recessed cans would be better over pendants is as follows: You do not want to open the cabinet doors and bump into the pendants. The lighting placement seems very close to the cabinetry. You also do not want the pendants to compete with your glass cabinet detail.

Here are more pics of Bar and Kitchen. To clarify, the rough-ins are over the radius of the bar-away from cabinets. We actually have two 4" cans in the center of bar. So the lights are not very close to cabinets! Thanks again!

I have to agree with Monique about utilizing recessed lighting for the bar. Guests tend to stand at the bar and the depth of your bulkhead doesn't allow for much drop for a pendant type fixture. You don't want the pendant to be at eye level or hovering above someone's head. I'm worried that 3 hanging fixtures in the kitchen and 3 more closeby over the bar is overkill on hanging fixtures. I love your monorail in the kitchen and
see using it with small track lights on it and then putting the Edison pendants over the bar. Or you could do the reverse and put monopoints (single track type lights) into the bulkhead over the bar and the Edison pendants over the island.

Hi Michigammemom,
Thanks for the suggestion - we like the pendant you selected for the Kitchen, but have to see if it works with a Monorail.
As for the bar, there were actually 6" cans in the perimeter that we had removed for the pendants - maybe that was a mistake! The pendants would not be directly over anyone's head, but I get what you are saying regarding not being in someone's face!
Maybe a short wire and small pendant would work?

As for scale, the bar height is 8 feet, kitchen 10 feet and great room 12 feet. I'm 6'4" and can barely reach the light boxes in Kitchen!

Thanks for the additional photos! Do you have any info on the monorail system that you are thinking about? Brand and model number? Now knowing that the pendants aren't up against the cabinetry, your pendants really need to accent the monorail or again, use only recessed at the bar area to not detract from the kitchen fixture since they are fairly close to each other. Does this make sense?

This is a great looking spacious kitchen! If you go for pendant lights, it should be larger to work with the proportion of the island.

Since the connections for fixtures are already installed over the bar, it seems to make more sense to use monopoint track-type lighting there, but without the track. Here's the type of monopoint lighting that would work at your bar. It's LED and comes with a shorter stem than is shown and also comes in other finishes. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas! What do you all think about incorporating Betsy's idea of color by having pretty purple hued crystal pendants in kitchen (to pull in from medallion and backsplash mosaic) and monopoint lighting in bar, as Carolyn and others mentioned? I didn't even know monopoint lighting existed! Thanks!

Because the colored glass totally encloses the bulb, you may not get enough light from the pendants and what you do get will be slightly colored.

I'm with Dytcture's idea of pendants you can also add track lights in the ceiling to add on top of the pendants to continue with the Modern look .

I would have two big lights over the island I just recently did a kitchen reno and used old school house lights, you could also do large industrial lights. The track lighting is a good idea for the bar or maybe do smaller pendants. I have seen some that look like a cube of ice. They add a lot of light but are not too intrusive. Be careful with the height, you dont want the light blinding the person sitting at the bar. Lovely reno and good luck with your choices!
